Chinese Greenfield investors seek larger market in the US - --is the largest greenfield investor in the US, according to the Financial Times. Now greenfield refers to a type of investment for a company that would be built from the ground up, including building a new factory or facility-- and, of course, creating jobs. Mark New looks at China's evolving investments into America. MARK NIU: The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most expensive real estate market's in the country. But that hasn't stopped Chinese greenfield investors like Fulton Street Ventures from pumping in $100 billion to build the largest condominium project in the city so far this year. One to two bedroom units will sell for what's considered a modest range-- $600,000 to $1 million US. MIKE LIU: The economies both China and the US are very good. And China real estate is a little bit slowed down. So that's why we diverted some of the investment in US. MARK NIU: In addition to the several construction and support jobs created by building this project, when the doors open, 500 permanent jobs will be created. And this is one of only five San Francisco Bay Area projects created by the same Chinese investment company. DARLENE CHIU BRYANT: The economy in China has changed. And so are the investors-- the real estate developers in particular-- are looking to diversify their portfolio. So the first place they go to is the US of A. We're a more stable investment, reliable, and safe. MARK NIU: Chiu Bryant heads San Francisco's effort to foster business exchanges with China. She says, in the past few years alone, total investment from China to the San Francisco Bay Area has been in the billions. DARLENE CHIU BRYANT: I would say that the amount of inbound investment that is coming in from China I think is only beginning. Because as we know, usually the trend is led by the big boys. And then you have the smaller guys coming in after that. And the thing is that what I'm also seeing is, there is a huge interest in investing in technology, whether it be hardware or whether it be software. MARK NIU: While Chinese tech investments not at the point where widespread manufacturing in the US is occurring, they are creating jobs. - The farthest growing global mobile company in the world. MARK NIU: Cheetah Mobile, headquartered to Beijing but listed on the New York Stock Exchange, recently held a launch party in San Francisco. It's adding the cheetah Ad platform to its family of mobile apps, which already reaches 440 million monthly users worldwide. XINHUA LIU: A lot of critics say that it's a mission impossible. We cannot do a. Buy we managed to break out of our domestic market and build a international presence here. As of Q1 of this year, our international mobile ad revenue accounted for almost 2/3 of the total mobile revenue. But by far, the US is our number one mobile advertising market. MARK NIU: In a year's time, Cheetah Mobile's US operations have grown from 10 to 50 people. It's actively recruiting engineers and investing in research and development. But as Chinese businesses continue to enter the US markets, Fulton Street Ventures' Mike Liu offers a word of caution. MIKE CHIU: The most difficult part for China investor come to US is the way they're thinking and doing business, the codes, the way they're communicating with the city, with the communities. That's an important part Chinese investors need to learn. MARK NIU: Increasingly, gaining the necessary knowledge of inspiring local teams, building businesses from the ground up.
